Drilling Processes and Capabilities

Conventional Drilling

Process Description: Conventional drilling is the most basic form of drilling, where a rotating drill bit is used to remove material and create a round hole. It is used for drilling simple holes with standard depths.

Machines Used:

  • =Radial Drilling Machines: Ideal for drilling large workpieces and holes with deeper depths.

  • Column Drilling Machines: Versatile, offering high precision for smaller or lighter components.

Applications:

  • Holes for fasteners, bolts, and pins in general manufacturing

  • Automotive parts, frames, and structural components

  • Electrical and control panel assemblies

Key Features:

  • Simple, cost-effective solution for basic hole drilling

  • High accuracy for standard holes

  • Can be used for a wide range of materials and thicknesses

CNC Drilling

Process Description: CNC drilling utilizes computer numerical control to automate the drilling process, providing high precision and repeatability. CNC drilling is ideal for parts that require multiple holes or complex drilling patterns.

Machines Used:

  • CNC Vertical Milling Machines: For automated drilling operations with high precision
  • CNC Drill Presses: Designed for drilling with automated feed and depth control.
  • Multi-Spindle CNC Drilling Machines: Capable of drilling multiple holes simultaneously in high-volume production.

Applications:

  • High-precision drilling for components such as engine blocks, aerospace parts, and molds ∙ Prototyping and production of printed circuit boards (PCBs)

  • Parts for automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries

Key Features:

  • High-precision hole positioning and repeatability

  • Ideal for complex geometries and multi-hole operations

  • Suitable for high-speed, high-volume production

Deep Hole Drilling

Process Description:  Deep hole drilling is used for creating deep, narrow holes with high precision. The process is typically used for drilling deep holes that require excellent surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

Machines Used:

  •  Deep Hole Drilling Machines: Specially designed machines that provide high rigidity and precision for deep drilling operations.

  • Gun Drilling Machines: For deep hole drilling with precise diameter control and minimal tool wear.

  • BTA (Boring and Trepanning Association) Machines: A method of deep hole drilling that removes material via both a boring bar and internal coolant.

Applications:

  •  Aerospace engine components (e.g., fuel injector holes)
  • Automotive engine blocks, shafts, and cylinders
  • Oil and gas drilling equipment

Key Features:

  • Excellent surface finish and dimensional tolerance
  • Ideal for creating holes with large aspect ratios (depth to diameter)
  • Capable of drilling extremely hard materials

Step Drilling

Process Description: Step drilling involves drilling holes with multiple diameters in a single operation. This process is often used to create holes that require different diameters at different depths, eliminating the need for multiple operations.

Machines Used:

  • CNC Milling Machines: Equipped with specialized tooling for step drilling.

  • Radial Drilling Machines: For step drilling operations that require flexibility and control over multiple steps.

Applications:

  • Creating stepped holes for assembly parts or components with varying diameters ∙ Hydraulic and pneumatic components

  • Parts for automotive and aerospace applications requiring multiple hole sizes

Key Features:

  • Efficient way to create multiple hole sizes in a single setup

  • High precision in both hole diameters and depths

  • Reduces setup time and increases production efficiency

Reaming

Process Description:  Reaming is a process used after drilling to refine the hole and improve its surface finish, diameter, and roundness. This process helps achieve higher tolerance and smoother hole walls.

Machines Used:

  • CNC Drilling Machines: Used for automated reaming of previously drilled holes to improve finish and accuracy.

  • Manual Drill Presses: For smaller, manual reaming tasks when high-volume production is not required.

Applications:

  • Creating smooth, accurate holes for bearings, bolts, or pins

  •  Aerospace and automotive parts requiring high-tolerance holes

  • Parts requiring fine finish and precise diameter control

Key Features:

  • Improves hole accuracy, roundness, and finish

  • Increases tolerance to ±0.005 mm or better

  • Can be used for both small and large holes

Countersinking

Process Description:  Countersinking is used to create a conical surface around the top of a hole, allowing the head of a screw or bolt to sit flush with or below the surface. This process is commonly used in assembly operations.

Machines Used:

  • CNC Drilling Machines: For high-precision countersinking.

  • Manual Drilling Machines: For simple countersinking operations.

Applications:

  • Fastener holes in aerospace, automotive, and electronics

  • Parts that require flush-mounted screws, rivets, or bolts

  • Sheet metal components and housings

Key Features:

  • ∙ Allows fasteners to sit flush with the surface

  • High precision and repeatability

  • Can be done in combination with drilling operations

Tapping

Process Description:  Tapping is used to create internal threads inside a hole. This process allows for the insertion of screws or bolts into the hole, providing a strong and secure connection.

Machines Used:

  • CNC Drilling Machines with Tapping Capabilities: For high-speed tapping operations

  • Automatic Tapping Machines: For high-volume tapping of holes.

Applications:

  • Threaded holes for bolts, screws, and inserts

  • Parts for the automotive, aerospace, and construction industries

  • Electrical enclosures, brackets, and machine components

Key Features:

  • Ability to create a wide range of thread sizes

  • High accuracy in thread depth and alignment

  • Efficient for high-volume tapping operations
